“You will go far with CTR” - Mr. Haymore

Being a CTR person means choosing the right at any point of time. It means you are honest, safe, caring, respectful, hard-working and many other characteristics. Choosing the right will allow you to achieve bigger and better things. Unlike being a CTW person which means being lazy, hateful and making wrong decisions that will get you into trouble. An example of being a CTR person is choosing not to smoke when everyone else is doing it. Even though you may feel pressured to do it the best thing you can do is walk away and not face the consequences. When you choose the right you receive good deeds. When you do the wrong thing you receive bad consequences. Being a CTR person will only affect you. It helps you determine if you want to achieve big things or become no one. Mr. Haymore taught the class that you will go far with CTR you can go to college/ university, you can earn a career. All it takes is hard work and determination. Make others proud not only them but yourself as well. You will go far with CTR.

“THE ULTIMATE CHOICE is to be a CTR Person - to Always CHOOSE THE RIGHT 24/7 !!!” - Mr. Haymore

CTR stands for choosing the right. Choosing the right will allow you to make your future better. Making your own choices is what creates the future for yourself. For example, if you are offered to smoke you are responsible for making that decision whether it will affect you negatively or positively. If you were a CTR person you would have chose to walk away and deny the offer. Be an example for others, if you show others that you are a CTR person they will become one as well because you show them what having a good character looks like. Some examples of choosing the right are being productive, safe, honest, patient, caring , hard working and many more. Although you are a CTR you still have to work hard to get what you want. Nothing will come to you if you’re being lazy. This is an example of a CTW person. CTW people are disrespectful to others, they are lazy, they use alcohol and drugs and they’re the ones who usually never have a bright future. Your ultimate choice should be being a CTR person because you make the right decisions and you don’t get into trouble. Many issues that CTW people have are being dishonest. Dishonesty often leads to bad consequences and they lose trust from others. Choosing the right is the ultimate choice you should make because you have a bright future and you won’t get in trouble.

“If there is beauty in character, there will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world. Conclusion: If there is beauty in character, there will be peace in the world.” - Chinese Proverb

Everyone in this world wants peace, people in your community, families, countries and others as well. The only way we will receive peace in by showing character. Having a beautiful character is the same thing as being a ctr person. Being a ctr person means choosing the right thing and making the right decisions. Having a beautiful character means being respectful and kind to others. This world needs peace and the best way to gain it is by showing others your beauty of character. Character leads to harmony in the home, order in the nation and eventually lead to peace in the world. This chinese proverb is teaching us that being respectful and having a good character will influence others to have a good character and create peace.

“A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder.” - Thomas Carlyle

A rudder is a part of the boat that keeps the boat moving. This helps guide the boat to get to its destination. Without the rudder part the boat wouldn’t be able to travel anywhere. This relates to your goals and what you want to accomplish. If you don’t have a goal you don’t have a rudder it doesn’t allow you to get up and move to your destination you would just be lazy. Unlike you having a goal you have something that motivates you to reach that goal and allows you to reach that destination. Without a rudder the boat doesn’t go anywhere, just like a person without a goal. Having a rudder allows the boat to move and actually get somewhere just like a person with a goal. People with goals are determined to reach for it they know one day they will get to their final destination and it’ll all be worth it in the end. Be the person with the goal not the boat that doesn’t get anywhere.

“When a deep injury is done us, we never recover until we forgive.” - Alan Paton

Alan Paton explains that we never recover until we forgive. This means forgiveness is the only way you will recover from the injury that a person caused. For example, if a friend were to do something bad and hurt you by using words the only way to recover from that is from forgiveness. You might even say “I’m never going to forgive them for that,” and that’s okay you may need time to think about the situation but in order to forget about it you need to forgive them first. Alan Paton taught us that forgiveness is the key to heal. When you forgive you forget and that's the only way you’ll heal. Forgiveness takes time and so does healing. When you forgive someone for their actions you release the anger and you feel better after knowing you let go of you had inside. A deep injury can cause a lot of anger toward yourself and the person who caused the situation. Once you forgive you forget.

“Dare to do right.” - Rex D. Pinegar

Rex D. Pinegar states to dare to do right. This means That you always do what’s right even when you are dared to do the wrong thing. For example, if your friends dare you to do something that you know is wrong, dare yourself to do the right thing instead of facing the consequences. If you don’t do what’s right you face the consequences and end up getting yourself into trouble because you did something foolish you could’ve prevented. It all comes down to your decisions. The decisions you make affect the way you live your life. Make the decision you believe is the right choice instead of getting yourself into trouble. Rex D. Pinegar also believes you should dare to do the right because he had a story to tell. They believed Rex wasn’t fast enough so one of his friends dared him to run across the street as fast as he could until a car passed by. He made the wrong decision and decided to show his friends that he was strong and brave. He ended up getting hit by a car. You face the consequences when you don’t do the right thing. Dare to do right instead of doing wrong.

“Dare to stand alone.” - Thomas S. Monson

To stand alone means standing up for what you believe is right even if everyone is against it. For example, being in a group of people and everyone else is drinking and smoking and talking bad about others. You know it’s not right so why stay. You stand up for yourself by leaving the group. It doesn’t matter if everyone else is against it. You stand up and leave before you face the consequences. Dare to stand alone in a situation where others are doing wrong. When people take the wrong actions they become more and more involved with doing the wrong. When you're stuck in making a decision, think about yourself. Think about your well being. Standing alone is better than getting into trouble and maybe ruining your life forever. Stand alone even when people are against doing the right thing.

“If I’ve got correct goals and if I keep pursuing them the best way I know how, everything else falls into line. If I do the right thing right, I’m going to succeed.” - Dan Dierdorf

This statement signifies that being a CTR person can lead to great success. Having the correct goals and pursuing them will allow you to succeed more than everyone else. Success takes hard work and determination so you have to set a goal and work for what you want to achieve. For example, making the decision to either study for a test or going out with your friends. It all comes down to the decision you make whether it's the right or wrong one. If you decide to stay and study for your upcoming test you would probably ace that test while your friends who didn’t study fail. Decisions make up whether you choose the wrong or right. Nothing will come when you choose the wrong it will only lead to bad consequences. Dan taught us that anything you set your mind to do you can accomplish it just takes time and effort. Success will come to you only if you are willing to work for it. Set your goals and work for what you believe you can get.

Philip Riggs’ Four Success Tips

  1. Work Hard.
  2. Follow your passions. Do things you are interested in doing
  3. Don’t chase after money.
  4. Serve others. Do good things for others, and good things will come to you.

These four tips all mean something different. They represent the things you should do in everyday life. For example, you have to work hard everyday to receive what you want. Being lazy won’t help you get to what you want. Be passionate and follow your passion. Everything is possible if you set your mind to do it. Do it because you're interested not because everyone else is doing it. Make your own decisions, follow your own passion, even if your passion is way different from others. Don’t chase after money means doing something you don’t enjoy just to get the money. Do something you enjoy doing and are proud of doing and earn your money. Don’t choose to do something you don’t like just because everyone else is doing it. Chase after your passion instead of the money. Last but not least, do good things for others. Doing good for others means gaining respect from others because they view you differently from others. When you do good for others you make people happy, as well as yourself. You do good things and good things will come to you. These four tips by Philip Riggs will allow you to better yourself and become successful.

“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing.” - Theodore Roosevelt

In our everyday life we make choices whether it's during school or outside of school. We think about our decisions and think about what the outcome will be. When it comes to decision making we choose the decision that we believe will be better for us. Theodore Roosevelt states to make the right decision in any moment of time. For example, if you have to study for a test and your friends call you to hangout. You would have to make a choice. Whether you meet up with your friends or you decide to study. Think about the benefits you would get out of studying and the consequences you will receive if deciding to hangout with  your friends. Make the right choice in any moment of decision.

“Nothing is ever gained in doing what’s wrong.”- Wilford Woodruff

There’s a difference when doing what’s wrong and doing what’s right. Doing the wrong thing is making the wrong choice and causing trouble to yourself or others. Doing the right thing is making the right choice and doing good to yourself and others around you. When doing the right thing you receive respect from others and you get a good feeling, a feeling of innocence because you did good instead of feeling guilt. Doing what’s wrong gains you nothing. For example, cheating on a test. You made the choice of cheating because you didn’t choose to study. What do you get in return? You get nothing, you just fail. You choose to receive nothing because you make the choices in doing what's wrong. You make your own choices, you either receive nothing or you receive something.

“It’s a GREAT MOMENT when someone has the character to step up and do the right thing at the right time.” - Pam Knox (Head Softball Coach Western Oregon)

Pam Knox states that it is a great moment when people do the right thing at the right time. Doing the right thing never fails. When choosing the right it doesn’t only benefit you but it benefits others around you. For example, if someone dropped a wallet the correct thing to do is give it back to its owner without hesitation. It will make that person feel so much better because you gave them something they lost. It would benefit you because you wouldn’t be full of guilt. Always do the correct thing don't follow up on what people say. You do good you receive good. You do bad you receive bad. When someone has the character to step up and do the right thing at the right time is always a great moment.

“I have been asked what I mean by ‘word of honor.’ I will tell you: Place me behind prison walls ---walls of stone ever so high, ever so thick, reaching ever so far into the ground --- there is a possibility that in some way or another I might be able to escape; but stand me on the floor and draw a chalk line around me and have me give my word of honor never to cross it. Can I get out of that circle? No, never! I’d die first.” - Karl G. Maeser

This quote by Karl G. Maeser means you always have to keep your word. It doesn’t matter if you have to sacrifice yourself into keeping your word. Word of Honor means making a promise that you will keep. In this case Karl G. Maeser is keeping a promise and keeping his word that he will never cross the chalk line. This statement is very powerful it shows how important it is to keep your word. It allows you to gain trust from others and it shows what kind of person you are. Such as Karl G. Maeser. He promised that he would never get out of the chalk line circle. Why did he never get out? Because it was his word of honor. Word of honor means making a promise. Don’t make a promise that you can’t keep because you will end up hurting others around you. You will lose the trust of others. Word of Honor, keep it or lose it.

“A promise must never be broken.” - Alexander Hamilton

The statement given from Alexander Hamilton means that you should never break a promise. Once making a promise you have to keep it. For example, promising your friend you’ll go to her birthday party, then not showing up at all. That is breaking a promise. Don’t ever make a promise you can’t keep. If you make a promise and break it no one will have trust in you. You want to gain trust from people not lose it. Promises can be said without using the word promise. Trust plays an important role in promises. If you keep a promise then everything and everyone will be fine. If promises are broken, you’ll lose someone's trust and maybe friendship. Never make a promise that you can’t keep. If you can’t keep a promise then communicate with that person and solve the conflict. Don't ignore the promise and pretend it didn’t happen. Don’t ever break a promise.

“Goodness is the only investment that never fails.” - Henry David Thoreau

This statement by Henry David Thoreau means that doing good is the only thing that will never fail. Being good means being respectful, having manners, being polite, being trustworthy, being a CTR person. For example, if you walk and find money on the floor and you think it might belong to the person in front of you, give it back. Taking CTR actions never fails. It will not only make the person feel happy but, it will make you feel happy as well. You get an unforgettable feeling that tells you and lets you know that you did the right thing in returning that money. Goodness is the only investment that never fails. Being good to others demonstrates that you are a kind, trustworthy person. If you do good you receive good. If you do bad you receive bad. The little things you do for others will make a person’s day 10 times better. Goodness should always be represented. Goodness means being safe, being respectful, being responsible and having manners. Goodness is the only investment that never fails. A wise statement from Henry David Thoreau.

“My basic principle is that you don’t make decisions because they are easy; you don’t make them because they are cheap; you don’t make them because they’re popular; you make them because they’re right.” - Theodore Hesburgh

Making the right decisions means choosing the right path. When choosing the right path you create a good future for yourself. When someone asks you why you made that choice you say you did it because it was the right choice. For example, if someone asks you to steal something that’s not yours you would automatically say no. Why? Because it was the right choice. Make your own decisions decide what is right for you. Don’t make the wrong choice even if everyone is for it. Making the right choice even if everyone is against it. Theodore Hesburgh wants us to make the right choice because it’s the right thing to do. Think about your decision and what it will cause. Think about the consequences, will they be good or bad. You don’t make your decisions because they are easy you don’t make them because it is cheap you make them because they are right. If you make the wrong decision the bad consequences will come to you. If you make the right choice better and good consequences will come to you. Make the decision because it is right not because it’s popular.

“It is our duty to concentrate all our influence to make popular that which is sound and good, and unpopular that which is unsound” (not good) - Joseph Smith

This statement by Joseph Smith means making and influencing others to do what’s right. Be a role model to the students and the people in our community to do what’s right. For example, your little brothers or sisters, you are a role model to them and you set an example to them so teach them ways to become a CTR person. Make them do good for others not just themselves. We need to concentrate on influencing others to do what’s right not wrong. Teaching others to do good will change the society and make it better for others. Joseph Smith says that we should make good popular and make bad unpopular. Be a role model to others and show them the difference between right and wrong.

“Character is higher than intellect.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

This statement means the thing that matters most is character. Having character means having a good attitude. For example, when joining a sport’s team the coaches look out to see if you have skills and put effort into playing the game. Not only that but they look at the way you play with others, to see if you have sportsmanship. Having a good character is important because it defines you as a person. You can be the richest or smartest person in the world but that wouldn't matter, character will. Being cooperative is part of having good character it also falls together with having a good attitude. Putting in effort and having character comes together to form something new. Having manners comes along with having good character and believe it or not it can change your aspects. Character is higher than intellect.

“True independence and freedom can only exist in doing what’s right.” - Brigham Young

Everyone dreams of having Independence and freedom. Brigham Young states that you can only get freedom and independence when doing what’s right. Doing what’s wrong will not give you freedom and independence you will only face the consequences. When you have freedom it means being independent and getting to do whatever you want. How will you get what you want by choosing the wrong. Being a CTR person can make a difference in the way you are living and the way you are forming your future. Being free and having independence is not just something that will come, you have to choose the right in order to receive it. For example, if  you want to go out with your friends and just have fun with them, ask your parents for permission. Do the right thing and complete all the tasks you have to complete in order to go with them. If you don’t obey your parents’ rules you won’t have the freedom, you won’t have that independence. Do what’s right in order to receive the independence and freedom you deserve.
